Who I am
About
Background
I'm a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (FIA) with over 20 years of experience in finance including pensions, insurance and investments. I have lived and worked in the Netherlands for 11 years.
Why I write
Expats in the Netherlands often face genuinely complex financial situations — pensions from multiple countries, cross-border inheritance questions, Dutch tax rules that interact in unexpected ways with foreign assets. I find the subject interesting, it overlaps with my own life, and writing about it helps me think more clearly about it.
The articles here are general-interest pieces on topics I've researched or come across. They are not advice and are not directed at any particular person's situation.
About this site
I'm building toward an independent, fee-only financial planning practice for English-speaking expats in the Netherlands, opening to clients in January 2028. I'm not currently providing advisory services and don't accept clients yet — nothing here is financial advice.
For now, this is simply where I write, about the pensions, investing and tax topics that come up in expat life. If you'd like to get in touch about anything I've written, you're welcome to email me below.
Get in touch. For anything I've written, email me at info@garvey.nl. This is a writing project for now, so I can't give individual financial, tax or legal advice — any reply will be general.
